Match Report

Hitchin Belles lost out 0-1 in a closely fought cup match against Garston Ladies. It was not the best of starts as due to traffic problems Hitchin had to play the first 20 minutes with only nine players! In spite of the numerical disadvantage, Hitchin enjoyed a lot of the early possession and chances. After only 2 minutes Elodie was put through on goal by Emily, and she shot just past the right post. Garston had their chances and Alex came sharply off her line to smother a chance.

More chances came for Hitchin in the early stages of the game with Alice shooting wide and Abigail blazing over from 6 yards out. Ilana also went close with a shot. The game was moving from end to end with both teams squandering chances. Alex again saved well from a committed break by Garston. Much of the chances created by Garston were coming from the left wing and Leah had an excellent first half negating the threat.

The Belles survived the first 20 minutes playing with only 9 players but then the cavalry arrived! Leticia and Alisha arrived and joined the fray but strangely this shifted the balance of play and Garston enjoyed their best period of the first half. Hitchin managed to hold on to half time, defending strongly in the face of strong pressure from Garston.

0-0 at half time and Hitchin needed to organise themselves better for the second half. There was really nothing to choose between the 2 sides and it looked like 1 goal could be enough. Straight from the restart, Fleur played Elodie through beating the offside trap but unfortunately she missed from close range. A really good chance had gone begging. Garston continued to look dangerous on the break and the Hitchin defence of Emily, Leah, Helen and Leticia were often stretched. Letitia brought down the Garston number 8 to concede a free kick on the edge of the area. The free kick led to a scramble in the 6-yard box and Emily was forced to blast the ball over the bar.

Garston continued to pressure and they scored after 10 minutes of the second half. Played through in a central position, Hitchin failed to clear and the ball was slotted home from the edge of the area. The Belles responded well with two very good chances. A period of sustained pressure resulted in a series of corners. Fleur forced an excellent save from the Garston goalkeeper. Abigail had a good run going passed several players but could only shoot over. More chances came but Hitchin just could not get the equaliser. The game ended with Hitchin about to take another corner.

It was certainly no disgrace to lose by the odd goal to a good Garston side. Special mention should go to Leah and Emily who were again excellent in defence and to Ilana who had her best game for The Belles.
