Match Report

Hitchin Belles came out 0-4 winners in a hard fought match away against Barnet Azzuri on Sunday. For the 3rd game in a row Hitchin was disadvantaged by not having a full compliment of players. With Amy lost in traffic The Belles started the game with only 10 players. Sarah made her debut and took on the goal keeping duties in the first half.

The game started evenly with both sides having early chances. Helen played the ball down the left hand flank to find Fleur who delivered a telling cross into the area, which found Elodie in space. She had more time than she realised and her shot went just wide. In the next attack Fleur found the back of the net but was flagged offside. Hitchin continued to enjoy good attacking possession but Barnet looked strong on the break. After 9 minutes the deadlock was broken. Ilana passed to Fleur in a central position and she in turn found Elodie who finished in style from 12 yards.

Barnet responded strongly and had a series of attacks though without threatening the goal. Sarah took a quick, long goal kick that found Elodie. She controlled the ball well and surged forward slotting home from the edge of the area for her thirteenth goal of the season. A quarter of the game gone and The Belles looked comfortable though more ill fortune was to follow. Alice struggling with a severe earache had to leave the pitch and Hitchin were down to 9 men. Luckily it was not for long as Amy turned up!

Play was much more even for the remainder of the first half. Barnet had chances to break and on at least one occasion were unlucky to be given offside. Sarah impressed in goal with her authority and strong goal kicks. Hitchin had further chances to add to the score line. From a corner Fleur blazed over the bar from 6 yards though the ball did come to her at speed and at an awkward height. Alex also had a good chance but scooped her shot wide of the left hand post. Barnet had another break and a strong shot went agonisingly wide.

Half time and the score at 0-2, 10 man Hitchin were playing well though the game was still in the balance. A reorganisation of resources saw Amy going in goal. Special mention should be given here to debutant Sarah who gave a very impressive performance in goal. With Hitchin playing up the hill in the second half, the game took on the same pattern as the first. Barnet upped their game and play moved pleasantly from end to end. Abigail, again giving an excellent and wholehearted performance, found Fleur in the area but the Barnet keep saved well. Alex, now playing in attack alongside Fleur, had a strong dribbling run from midfield but lacked support at the vital moment and she shot wide. The third goal involved a large slice of luck. Elodie whipped in a corner and found Alex whose shot for goal was turned in by a Barnet defender, in spite of a heroic effort on the goal line from her teammate. The goal was attributed to Alex.

After 21 minutes of the second half Elodie made a great run and turned provider for Fleur who scored with a confident cross shot. This was Fleur’s eighth goal of the season. Letitia and Elodie both went close with long-range shots. Barnet continued to look organised and dangerous on the break and to make chances. One goalmouth scramble resembled a pinball game but Hitchin managed to clear. Emily as usual gave a strong defensive performance with a series of superbly timed tackles to frustrate the Azzuri attackers. The game ended with at 0-4, Hitchin’s fourth successive league win.
