Match Report

Hitchin Belles edged out Garston Ladies in a thrilling match on Sunday afternoon winning by 3 goals to 2. It was not the best of starts for Hitchin as due to absences they had to play the game with only 10 players. This meant a reorganisation of resources with Alex again having to take up the goal keeping duties.

The game started at high tempo with Garston pressing hard and forcing a corner in the opening minute. Play moved from end to end with few clear chances though Fleur went close after a run from midfield. Then after 15 minutes Garston went ahead with an excellent passage of play down the left that was finished with a good shot into the corner of the goal.

Hitchin responded well with more of the possession. On 20 minutes Elodie played a through ball to Fleur and she finished well from 20 yards. The remainder of the half was very competitive with a fierce midfield battle with Alisha, Abigail and Letitia competing well. The defensive four of Alice, Emily, Leah and Helen looked pretty comfortable. 1-1 at half-time.

In the second half Hitchin were playing up the slope and it was feared that the lack of a complete team would begin to tell. Garston started strongly and looked dangerous in attack but Hitchin had the best of the chances. Hitchin forced a series of corners and Letitia, Elodie and Helen all had excellent chances to add to the score. Somewhat against the run of play Garston went ahead with a breakaway that the defence for once failed to get to grips with. At 2-1 it was beginning to look tough for The Belles but they continued work hard to get back into the game.

The equaliser was one to remember! After 15 minutes of the second half Hitchin forced a corner after good attacking passage of play. Elodie took the corner from the left and the ball flew straight into the goal. At 2-2 the game could have gone either way but The Belles were pressing hard. Elodie hit a post after a good dribble from midfield. Then with 6 minutes left Abigail, who was impressive throughout with her energy and ball winning, scored with a shot from 6 yards.

At 2-3 it should have been over but Garston were spurred on by going behind and they battled very hard for the equaliser. In the remainder of the game all the chances were going the way of the home side. One clear chance was blasted over from 10 yards whilst another fantastic shot hit the bar. The defence was stretched but managed to hold firm. Special mention should be given to Leah and Emily who tackled strongly throughout.

The game ended not a moment too soon with Hitchin Belles running out 2-3 winners.
