Match Report

The league cup meeting between Hitchin and Garston provided an entertaining 2-2 draw. The conditions were not in favour as a very strong wind blowing across the pitch had a large bearing on the game. Hitchin was without several key players including Emily, Fleur, Alice and Alex, as a result no substitutes were available. Chloe made her debut for Hitchin Belles. Amy took on the goalkeeping jersey for the entire match with Leah, Helen, Abigail and Alysha in defence. Midfield consisted of Ilana, Lateasha, Destiny and Chloe, with Sarah and Elodie in attack. Whilst resources were scarce for Hitchin, it was worse for Garston who could only field 9 players but they played through with a positive and attack minded attitude.

The game started slowly with plenty of play in midfield but little in the way of goalmouth action. Whilst Hitchin generally had more of the play, Garston pressed hard and their lack of numbers certainly did not show. The deadlock was broken after only 9 minutes when a pass from Sarah found Elodie in space in the penalty area and she shot home from a few yards. Several more chances came but Hitchin could not add to their tally. A corner from Elodie produced a scramble in the box but no home player could finish. Garston carried great threat on the break, particularly on the left, and Alysha needed to make several tackles to break up attacks.

Garston equalised with a fluid break, which left the Hitchin defence exposed, and Amy had no chance to save. The game became end to end with both teams creating plenty of chances. Abigail and Elodie went close and Lateasha failed to connect in a glorious position in front of goal. Hitchin went into the lead just before half time. Again Sarah found Elodie who made space inside the penalty area and she scored her 18th goal of the season into the left hand corner of the goal with an excellent cross shot.

2-1 to Hitchin at half time and it could have expected that their numerical advantage would begin to count in the second half but it was not to be. With the disadvantage of the wind in the second half they failed to add to the goal tally. Abigail had two great chances to score, the second from a dribbling run from midfield, but could not finish either. Elodie had more chances but on two occasions hit her shots just too close to the Garston goalkeeper. Garston continued to play positively looking to break at every occasion and they equalised again after 44 minutes. Amy made a great save to stop a Garston shot but the rebound found another player who scored easily. It could have been worse; within a minute the away side had another fine attacking move but Amy made an excellent save diving to her right. More chances came to Hitchin, Chloe made a strong run through the centre of midfield but the ball ran away from her before she could shoot.

The game ended at 2-2. Whilst Hitchin had many chances and could easily have scored more, Garston deserved to get something from the game with their positive play with only 9 players. There were several strong performers vying for player of the match; Elodie with more goals and her leadership, Abigail with her usual committed performance, Helen and Leah who were steady in defence, but the award went to Alysha who impressed everyone with her tackling and wholehearted performance throughout.

So Hitchin will not go forward to the next round of the League Cup…but the significant challenge of QPR waits next Sunday!
