Match Report

Hitchin Belle’s 6 match winning run in the league came to an end with a 2-0 defeat away at Enfield on Sunday. Enfield deserved to edge this close encounter with a strong, organised performance in which they defended strongly and threatened constantly on the break. Special mention should go to the Enfield goalkeeper who made a series of excellent saves to shut out the Hitchin attack.

Resources were limited with only 11 players available. Sarah took on the goalkeeping jersey for the first half with Emily, Leah, Helen and Alysha in defence. Midfield was made up of Abigail, Ilana, Destiny and Alex with Elodie and Fleur in attack. The game started promisingly with both Abigail and Fleur having chances in the opening minutes but neither could find the target. Hitchin continued to press but looked vulnerable at the back and Enfield had some dangerous attacks on the break but some poor finishing did not threaten the goal. On 5 minutes after a Hitchin attack broke down, Enfield had 2 attackers against 1 defender but Helen managed to claim possession and clear. At the other end a pass from Destiny found Elodie who was just dispossessed as she went to shoot. The game flowed from end to end with few clear-cut chances. After 11 minutes Ilana had a terrific shot from the edge of the area which looped just wide of the crossbar. More chances came to Fleur and Elodie but the Enfield goalkeeper looked very secure. The Belles had a series of corners but could not make them count and Enfield continued to stretch the Hitchin defence with Emily and Leah called on to clear.

0-0 at half time and Hitchin reorganised with Alex going in goal with Sarah moving to midfield. The second half started and immediately Hitchin got another corner, their 7th of the game and from this Sarah had a strong shot well saved by the goalkeeper. Enfield started to take control of the game and the balance of play was moving in their favour. The deadlock was broken on 35 minutes. Play moved straight from Hitchin attacking play to the other end, Helen made a super tackle to prevent a shot but this created a chance for another player whose strong strike could only be parried by Alex into the goal.

Hitchin continued to press but Enfield pushed hard for a second. On 43 minutes Enfield should have doubled their lead from a corner but wasted the opportunity but the second goal was not long in coming. It was simple route one football, the Enfield goalkeeper made a long clearance to her strikers and an untimely slip by Alysha allowed them to take advantage. It was difficult to see how Hitchin could recover from a 2-goal deficit but they continued to play positive football and chances came. An excellent corner from Elodie was met by Destiny but the goalkeeper managed to smother the chance. Fleur had a good break out pacing the defence but the ball just got too far ahead of her. With almost the last kick of the game Sarah took the ball into the penalty area, turned and shot strongly but again the goalkeeper made a superb save low down to her left.

The game ended 2-0 and this meant Enfield move ahead of Hitchin in the table into third and fourth places respectively.
