Disappointingly, Hitchin found themselves lining up to start this cup match against Enfield B with only 9 players. Luckily, the opposition were in exactly the same situation, so the two managers were happy to agree to a 9-a-side match. Then it occured to both of them that they each had a younger player willing to play, so we ended up with a 10-a-side match, with Jasmine's younger sister Adrian playing for the Belles.

Hitchin started the match pretty well - they looked pretty solid throughout, and we felt they had the better of the first 15 minutes or so, without managing to make any clear chances. Twenty minutes into the game Enfield managed to pull ahead when a fairly innocuous ball forward led to a bit of a lapse of communication between Hitchin defender and keeper, and with neither claiming it the Enfield player managed to get a foot to the ball and poke it past Kerry into the goal. Just 5 minutes later another 'soft' goal was conceded with Hitchin twice failing to clear the ball out of defence. Hitchin were 2-0 down when they should have been level or ahead. Shortly before half-time Casey came close to reducing the lead with a well taken shot from distance, but the ball ran just wide and the half ended with Hitchin trailing by the two goals.

The second half went no better for Hitchin than the first - another goal gifted to Enfield soon after the restart. Jasmine scored a superb goal to briefly raise Hitchin's hopes, but a fourth goal from Enfield really put the seal on the match. In the final 15 minutes Hitchin again looked stronger, and it was hard to believe that they ended up loosing the match 6-2, a second goal from Jasmine our only consolation. Many of the Hitchin players worked hard through the match, and the guest performance from Adrian was an absolute revelation - she will have a big impact when she joins a team in her own age-group. The overall impression of the match however is of a game that the team didn't really fight hard enough to win, and a series of mistakes that cost us dear. The girls will have to raise their spirits, and hopefully a full team turnout for coming matches will allow them to raise their game and perform to the level that they know they are really capable of.
