A minute's silence before kick-off

Before kick-off the two teams observed a minute's silence under the threatening skies at Ickleford. The weather held for the start of the match, with the Belles for once having a wealth of players to call on. Nigel chose a fairly defensive formation to start with, Carmen and Tamsin in the centre of defence certainly challenging the Harvesters players. Carmen used her speed a few times early in the match to get back and cut out dangerous passes, and Tamsin used her skill and strength well in the middle to keep the attacking players pinned down. Kerry and Abby made up the defensive line, and worked hard to both cover back and try to support the Hitchin break. The game started well for Hitchin - although mainly defending they did look strong and were certainly not overwhelmed by their opposition from the top end of the table.

Attacking chances for Hitchin mainly came from quick counter attacks, and both Chloe and Bethan showed that given half a chance they would pose a real threat to the Harvesters goal.

It was a very tense and exciting half, but with Hitchin defending well and Harvesters not quite managing to make any clear chances, the score after 35 minutes stood still at nil-nil.

Break-away

We had a little shower of rain at half-time, but by the time play resumed the rain had passed and the players could concentrate on resuming the battle. The second period started in much the same spirit as the first half; tenacious defending from Hitchin while Harvesters tried to force their way through.

After ten minutes Hitchin suffered a stroke of bad luck - a cross from the Harvesters right wing was judged to have hit a Hitchin arm. There was surely no intention in this, but the referee judged it hand-ball, and as it happened just inside the goal area a penalty was awarded. Ellie in goal was given no chance with the penalty - it was slotted low into the left side of the goal, and Hitchin found themselves a goal behind.

The goal shocked Hitchin, and within 5 minutes the defecit was doubled. This time Harvesters were awarded a free kick some way outside the penalty area on the left of the field. The kick came into the area but seemed to have been cleared by the Hitchin defenders. However, as fast as the ball came out of the area, it was returned twice as fast, with a shot from distance that again gave Ellie no chance. Two goals conceded within five minutes, and you might fear a collapse by the Belles. In fact they picked themselves up and got straight on with the game, fighting again to try to claw something back. The rest of the match passed without further score, and the Belles should take pride in the way they resisted and their spirit in defeat.
