This was a tough match from the very beginning - the Lea Valley players were strong and skillful, and very determined. The Belles found themselves defending most of the time, but never overrun. After around 10 minutes of fairly even play Lea Valley claimed the first goal with a passage of very good passing leading up to a chance for their striker to shoot past Ellie in a one-on-one situation. She made no mistake and Ellie had no chance to stop the close-range shot.

After the first goal the game again settled into a very strongly contested battle, with Hitchin in the main defending bravely, but always with the threat of a dangerous break-away attack. The visitors thought they had extended their lead after another 10 minutes, only for the goal to be ruled off-side; a decision that was not well received by the team or supporters! After that chance Hitchin held on, and the score at half-time stayed at 0-1 to Lea Valley.

At half-time Nigel delivered an impassioned speech to the Belles, praising their attitude and encouraging them to stick at it and continue to play with the passion and committment they had shown all through the first half. We suspected that Lea Valley had got quite a surprise by the gutsy performance of the Belles, playing far better than recent results would lead one to suppose.

The second half took up where the first half had left off - pressure from Lea Valley meeting stubborn defence from Hitchin. After just five minutes however a high ball over the top of the Hitchin defenders left Kerry chasing back to try and get on terms with the Lea Valley attacker. Ellie in goal spread herself to try to deny the player her shot, but the attacker cleverly threaded the ball past her to take the score to 0-2. Another five minutes passed and Lea Valley had another great chance, but this time Ellie made a stunning high save to stop the long-range shot.

Minutes after this another chance from Lea Valley was ruled off-side; Hitchin were still hanging on! About 25 minutes into the half Hitchin had their best chance of the game, with Tamsin and Carmen chasing a ball crossed in from the right by Beth. The shot fell to Tamsin, but sadly it ran out just to the left of the goal with the Lea Valley goalie stranded out of contention. This proved to be the last real chance for Hitchin, and the game ended with the score unchanged. This was a really good battling effort from the Belles, and every one of them can be proud of their hard work and fighting attitude in a very hard-fought match.

Some words from the Manager

I am proud of each and every player for their performance in this match. You showed true fighting spirit and it is this effort that will give us the points we deserve. Ellie was again a star in goal and Tamsin and Kerry made numerous challenges and clearances. Full backs Christie, Abs, Ruby and Bethany showed that no matter how many times they got knocked down they would get right back up again. Maddy played her best game for us this season and Casey and Jazz were winning the ball time and time again, wingers Chloe, Sophie and Bethan were great in support play and making runs. Carmen as ever, ran her heart out and was unlucky not to score. I have never seen so many injuries and tears in a match and the fact you did not get intimidated shows true character. WELL DONE.
