Happily the snow had cleared by the time the team met up at Buckden for this match, but less happily we only had 10 players to put on the pitch. Casey was back to help make up the numbers, but starting one player short was always going to make for a tough match.

Christie agreed to play the first half in goal, and the rest of the players adopted more or less familiar positions around the pitch for the kick-off. Sadly it seemed that the team did not quite start the match at full power - within a matter of 3 minutes or so the Belles had conceded two goals. After this terrible start the match was only going to get harder, but the girls fought hard, and stiffened up their defence markedly to keep Buckden from running all over us. After a fairly dogged period in the middle of the half, the Belles again found themselves on the wrong end of another pair of goals towards the end of the period, and the first half ended with the score at 4-0 in favour of Buckden.

For the second half Kerry took up the goalies gloves, and Christie moved outfield into a defensive role. The second half proved no easier than the first for the Belles, and again it was Buckden who had the much stronger game and put the Belles under severe pressure for much of the time. Their fifth goal arrived around 10 minutes into the half, and a sixth followed 15 minutes later.

Hitchin did have some break-away chances, and put pressure on Buckden at times. With less than 5 minutes remaining in the match one such period of pressure led to Buckden conceding a penalty for hand-ball in the area. No-one on the Hitchin team seemed very keen to step forward to take the kick, but finally Carmen took the responsibility and was very unlucky not to score when her well-struck shot hit the crossbar and rebounded out of the goal.

That was the last significant goal-scoring chance of the game, and it ended as a 6-0 defeat for the Belles - but again a game in which many showed real spirit and committment, and put in commendable effort through a game which was against them from the start.
