Match Summary

Any visit to play Luton away is potentially a difficult match but on a bright day at Lutonís very pleasant ground with very good clubhouse facilities for the spectators, Hitchin played some sublime football to tear the Luton defence apart in a first half 40 minute blitz on the Luton goal. The Luton goalkeeper was impressive and made several excellent saves otherwise the score for Hitchin could have nudged double figures.

The second half was quieter but Hitchin still put away 2 very good opportunities and continued to play good football through a very strong midfield partnership of Sarah and Steph with the attacking front line really putting away the chances with Louise scoring a very good hat trick.

The defence had a much quieter game and in the absence of Lauren, Keeley, Elise, Monica, Jo and Natalie really stopped Lutonís forwards doing anything once they broke through. Eva made several fine clearances particularly with the right foot and came out of the goal well to defend her area.

Roisin returned to the team and put in another competitive performance and played some good football.

The first half performance against a very solid Luton team was probably one of Hitchinís best team performances since beating Cambridge away last year, the passing skills and ball control was very good and the chances created were quite breath taking on occasions. Blah blah blah

First Half

A determined Hitchin side started very brightly with Sian putting an early shot on target. Luton conceded an early corner to Hitchin and in a nice piece of play Sian put a header just wide of the upright.

Sarah made a good run and put a good shot on target, which was followed soon after by Louise having her shot narrowly saved. Monica tidied up nicely at the back when Luton attacked and Steph and Sammy started to link very well.

Hitchin were forcing errors out of the Luton defence and Natalie hit a great header just wide from a Sammy curling free kick, as the ball came out again Natalie hit a screamer of a shot from 25 yards that the Luton keeper just managed to stop.

It was all Hitchin with corners and free kicks being conceded by an increasingly desperate Luton. Louise bought several more good saves out of the keeper, as Hitchin did not let Luton out of their own half.

The deadlock was broken after a goalmouth scramble when Natalie charged forward and belted the ball right into the top of the net from close range to make it Hitchin 1-0 up. Luton pressed forwards and Roisin made a good series of tackles. Alex came back to help and made some telling tackles. Alex then turned to attack and linked with Steph who put in a good shot.

Hitchin piled forward through Louise who set up Alex to smack the ball home to make it 2 nil to Hitchin. Joy and relief were written large on Paulís face!

Louise made another great run to force a Hitchin corner. The ensuing melee from the corner saw Louise pounce like the great striker she is to put Hitchin 3 nil up and effectively end the game or so we thought. A spirited response from Luton from the kick off saw Luton snatch a goal back despite a desperate dive from Eva to try and save the shot. 1-3.

The perfect response and end to the half saw a great piece of Hitchin attacking play end with Louise scoring again to make it 4-1.

Second Half

After the exertions and exhilaration of the first half it was a much quieter second half but Hitchin carried off where they started forcing the pace and dominating the midfield. The start of the second half was marked by a very brave Luton player who charged Eva for a 50/50 ball and no surprises here Eva won. The Luton player is still on the rebound after ending up in Bedford!

There were several very good attacking moves and Sian was unlucky not to score. Sammy played some lovely football on the left and her jinking runs were a defenders nightmare, this week again she bought along her scoring boots and at the end of a really good run she hit a beauty of a left footed shot way past the goalie into the top corner, Hitchin 5 Ė1 up and looking good.

Luton to their credit did not give up and continued to try and press forward but Hitchin kept forcing corners and free kicks with Steph and Sarah winning every 50/50 ball in midfield which meant the pressure was off the Hitchin defence and on Lutonís.

A series of really good passing interchanges saw Steph hit a fiery shot against the cross bar. A quick Luton attack saw Eva clear intelligently with a good kick up field which Sarah latched onto and put Louise through. Louise again took her chances fantastically and coolly slotted home to make it 6-1 to Hitchin and Hitchin finished the game as they started.

Overall a great team performance, some lovely interchanges and passing skills from every player, chances were created and finished well. A great game to watch played at a fast pace and Hitchin were well-deserved winners. On this sort of form they can play and beat the best. They do need to talk more on the pitch but there was little to fault in this performance. Away to Harvesters B next week and lets hope Hitchin can make it 4 in a row which would be the their best ever run.
