Match Report

On the day of the London Marathon Hitchin’s long season started its closing run with an away match at Hampstead. These two sides seem to produce goals a plenty when they meet and today was to be no exception.

Hitchin started very brightly against Hampstead and looked the better side in the opening exchanges. Louise was very strong in driving forward with her runs and tackling back to help the defence and these attacking intentions reaped a reward when Sammy rounded the defenders to put Sian in the clear in the box, which Sian then dispatched to put Hitchin in front. 0-1. However the Hampstead strike force were quick and dangerous and after some brave defending by Monica a corner was conceded and Hampstead punished Hitchin’s indecision in clearing the threat. 1-1.

Stephanie worked extremely hard in midfield and made some telling interceptions. Sian ran extremely well up front but Hampstead continued to menace the Hitchin defence and were awarded a penalty. They scored from the penalty to make it 2-1.

All in all with some very strange weather going on with the sun shining one minute freezing cold rain the next it had all the hall marks of turning into a very strange day and it did as a helicopter flying a very large flag for a margarine maker swooped down overhead from the London Marathon sponsors. This seemed to galvanise the Hitchin team and Eva moved very smartly out to deal with the attacking threat. Keeley played well on the left putting in some intelligent passes and providing Sammy with the service she needed.

Sammy on another probing run piled through the defence and passed beautifully to Sarah who blasted the ball into the net. 2-2.

Hampstead hit back immediately and Natalie cleared the ball off the line and Elise had to put the tackles in. Lauren also had her work cut out and dealt really well with the Hampstead attacks.

The second half started with Sarah forcing a corner for Hitchin. Alex got in on the action and fired just over the bar. Natalie joined the attack and headed just over from a corner but it was all Hitchin creating the chances and passing the ball well. Unfortunately Monica was hurt in a strong tackle. Steph then put on her shooting boots and hit the target several times unfortunately the goal keeper got in between the ball and goal; on several occasions.

Completely against the run of play Hampstead stormed forward and scored to make it 3-2. Then followed some desperately unlucky moments for Hitchin as Sammy’s great free kick was well saved, Sarah again foiled by the keeper and Sian was just over the bar with a header. Sian was again frustrated by the keeper and in the dying seconds of the match a moment of controversy as Hitchin were judged to have been off side in a great attacking movement. However the team whilst creating chances just could not put them away. They were unlucky to lose but if the passion had been shown at the start of the match compared to the last 10 minutes then the result could have been very different.

The next match is home against Harvesters and this is a must win match for the Belles to consolidate their leaguer table position above the Harvesters.

Girl of the match

2 this week; Sian for her passion and running and Steph for putting a real bite into midfield.
