Match Report

This was Hitchin’s penultimate match of the season and the day started warm and bright but by kick off torrential rain and cold winds were blowing across Ickleford, so much rain that my notes were reduced to mush and Paul started to build an Ark. Apologies therefore for the brief match report but it was hard to see much through the rain and though my notes are now dried out they look like a papier-mâché swan! Hitchin and Harvesters seem to be the Liverpool and Chelsea of the league meeting regularly in the cup matches at the semi final stage but this was a league match with Hitchin just sitting one place higher in the league but within range if Harvesters won.

From the kick off Harvesters stormed forward and after a very early scare in the Hitchin area Harvesters scored to make it 0-1.

Hitchin then woke up and started to play keeping the ball low in the windy conditions and playing some good passes. Sammy linked with Louise who then threaded to Sian but some good defending saw off the threat. Keeley and Monica effectively nullified the danger down the wings but Harvesters played through the middle strongly to put pressure on Lauren and Sarah playing in a new defensive position.

The attacks were all coming from Harvesters and Eva made a great series of very agile saves to keep Hitchin in the game. Alex worked hard on the right to move the ball forwards and with Louise probing in the middle the game started to move Hitchin’s way. Sammy in a great piece of individual play got on target and let fly to equal the scores 1-1. Sian and Louise really started to test the defence and Hitchin were dominating the game. This much more aggressive play saw a penalty awarded to Hitchin but the Goalie saved. Again soon after Hitchin won another penalty and this time the upright came to Harvesters rescue, so much drama in such a short space of time!

Half time 1-1

Hitchin started the second half where they left off and Louise bought out a great save from the keeper. In defence Monica played extremely well and Eva was on fire making some great saves.

Steph was a powerhouse in midfield and put in some crunching tackles. Sarah and Lauren were playing well in central defence and Roisin despite not being fully fit put in a very tenacious performance. It all was looking good for Hitchin until Harvesters taught them a lesson on how to make the most of it in a dead ball situation. They won a free kick just outside the area and the resulting curling free kick was unstoppable. 1-2. The football was then end to end and played in a great spirit with some lovely play from Hitchin prising open the defence but just not scoring, the ball was cleared off the line but luck was not going Hitchin’s way. Harvesters then won another free kick outside the area and this was met by a fiercesome header that shot in, slightly unfairly on Hitchin as the free kick was contentious. However 1-3 and Harvesters were home and dry unlike the weather. Despite the scoreline a close match and Hitchin were disappointed not to have done better.

The final game of the season is against the run away league leaders Luton so a great chance to cause an almighty upset!

Girls of the match

Sammy and Sian who tried really hard, Steph and Louise for their commitment in midfield and Eva for her flying saves.
