Match Summary

This was the first visit of the Kidlington team who are riding high in the league and who have only lost 2 matches so it was going to be tough, no walk in the park this week.

The scoreline probably did not reflect the match, which was tighter than expected. Hitchin Belles really stepped up their game to cause a few scares of their own and were unlucky not to score a couple of goals. A very competitive match played in good spirit and the visitors were a class outfit.

Kidlington started with menace and forced an early corner. However Hitchin hit back with a good combination of Sammy through to Steph who passed to Sian saw Hitchin put pressure on the opposition. Kidlington came back like the tide and were not going to be stopped. Alex tracked back to make a great saving tackle to release some of the pressure but the pressure still remained and Eva pounced into action to make a rare diving save to save the day.

Hitchin then hit back forcing a corner. A great corner from Louise saw Sarah swoop and hit the ball goal bound. Our breath was stopped and everything seemed to be in slow motion, as it looked certain Hitchin were to score and take the lead. Then unbelievably Kidlington dramatically cleared off the line, great excitement but no score.

As if this was too much to bear Hitchin won another corner which Sian met and hit goal bound, again a score looked certain and then again a clearance right off the line it was too much to bear.

High drama again followed and in a cruel stroke of fortune a fast attack from Kidlington saw them slot the ball home to make it 0-1.

The Hitchin defence was getting a real work out now and a special mention for Lauren who despite being ill all night battled bravely on in the heart of defence. However it was now Monica’s turn to make the goal saving tackle and clear the lines. Battling bravely on the right Roisin was putting in the tackles as well and twisting to feed the ball forward.

Sammy then started to make an impact and sliced through the defence to have a good shot well saved.

Half time and a chance for the team to catch their breathe and reflect upon a good first half.

Early pressure from Kidlington saw them score early with a looping shot. 0-2.

However Hitchin kept their heads up and in a good piece of interplay Sian passed back to Alex whose shot was just wide.

Natalie then stormed into action winning the 50/50 balls and making some crunching tackles. Eva made a series of fine saves but the pressure was mounting. Louise ran her heart out and tracked back to help out along with Steph. Kidlington won a corner and put the ball in the net to make it 0-3.

Kidlington really kept up the pressure and Lauren worked extremely hard and made a series of great tackles.

Kidlington hit twice more in quick succession and it just seemed the Hitchin efforts bounced off an invisible force field but Kidlington’s went in.

The team played really well with no substitutions in a fast game and their stamina was good.

No match this week but some more tough matches however lots to take pride from in this match and the commitment and attitude the team showed does them credit. They are respected in the league and sit mid table in a very tough league, which is to their credit. It is really important the team pull together now and enjoy their football to the close of the season. On another day they can turnover the top teams and with a bit more match practice they can build on this performance.

Girl of the match

The whole team for keeping up their heads and showing a really positive attitude.
