Match Report

The start of the New Year and a tough away trip to Enfield where Hitchin have had trouble prising open the Enfield defence in the past. A bright lovely January day greeted us in Enfield it just needed the birds to be singing and it would have been quite spring like.

After quite a long lay off and a massive attack on cakes, biscuits, sweets and Christmas puddings over the Christmas period saw the Hitchin Belles in peak form…. not as they say!

However they started brightly and after only 10 minutes Sammy who obviously had not over indulged at Christmas danced through the defence to place a lovely ball into the top corner 0-1 to Hitchin. A great start.

Enfield however were not going to lay down and be beaten with their lone attacking forward and swift counter attacks Lauren and co had a tough time in defence and despite Eva’s best efforts the Hitchin defence buckled twice in quick succession to let Enfield through to make it 2-1 at half time.

A good pep talk from Paul saw Hitchin take to the pitch for the second half in a much better frame of mind. Despite having much of the possession and laying siege to the Enfield goal they could not break down their defences, several great crosses from Louise, Sarah and Steph went past and Hitchin really started to play with some lovely interchanges involving Louise, Sian, and Sammy. Lauren, Keeley, Natalie and Jo coped extremely well with the fast counter attacks and Alex had a great cheetah like run only to be stopped by the very muddy corner of the pitch.

A much better second half performance and I felt Hitchin were unlucky not to equalise. Some really good football was played and all credit to both teams for a very entertaining match played in a very good spirit.

A lot more commitment was shown by all of the team in the second half and this needs to work over 80 minutes, at this level every one has to pull together and work their hardest any weakness will be found out and punished. We need to see more running off the ball, much better communication on the pitch, tell your team mates where you are, look for the gaps and shout for the ball, support each other, there needs to be more encouragement and most of all enjoy the game.

Next week we entertain Harvesters at home in the first of 2 cup matches and in the second a final place is at stake all to play for so good luck and focus on the job in hand if you want to win you will as all of the skills are there.

Girls of the Match

Lauren magnificent in defence and Steph worked her heart out in midfield.
