Match Summary

This Sunday saw a cup semi final appearance for Hitchin coincidentally at the same time as the FA Cup 4th round and after the usual heroics of the minnows in the FA cup was it to be Hitchin’s turn to upset the odds and storm the Harvesters fortress? Unfortunately on a lovely January day only the sun shone on Hitchin and not lady luck as in 8 swift counter attacks Harvesters unleashed a deadly volley of shots to score 6 goals. The score line did not reflect the match with Hitchin creating chances a plenty but not converting them as readily as the Harvesters team who let loose a demon striker whose goal bound volleys from short range and long were quite devastating.

The match started brightly with all of the Hitchin team looking hungry to get the result. Louise led from the front working hard to drive Hitchin forward, Alex made some good early runs to chase the ball down and the early enterprise showed as Hitchin won the first corner of the game. Sarah began to probe forward and again after a darting run forced another corner to Hitchin. Again the Hitchin pressure continued and after the corner was defended another corner to Hitchin, however the last touch just evaded Sammy and so it was to be the last bobble of the ball just did not go Hitchin’s way there was always a body in the way or the pass was just too long but what was really good was the teams attitude and the creation of chances.

However Harvesters also had the scent of a final place in their nostrils and not to be outdone started to attack with a vengeance.

Eva made a couple of very good saves diving to her right to push one shot around the upright.

Lauren was great making telling tackle after tackle but after a Harvesters corner up popped the striker and bang it was 1-0 to Harvesters.

More attacks from Harvesters and Natalie, Roisin and Monica had to work hard to clear their lines. At this stage you felt Hitchin were still in with a shout but Harvesters were forcing the pace and in a superb piece of defending Lauren standing tall alone against 3 attackers made a vital tackle to clear the ball away. However 35 minutes into the game another rocket of a shot soared into the Hitchin net 2-0 down.

Hitchin kept their heads up and Louise winning the ball back passed to Steph who made an inch perfect pass to Sarah who turned the defender and buried the ball under the approaching goal keeper to make it 2-1. One of the teams best goals from a lovely piece of play and brilliantly finished by Sarah.

Half time and as the teams returned onto the pitch in a blur of movement Harvesters scored within seconds of the kick off to make it 3-1. As they say Hitchin had the mother of all mountains to climb. Horror of horrors were to follow when another crack shot from the Harvesters hit the post rebounded out and was buried with a vengeance 4-1 to Harvesters and the match was over. However with Sammy and Sian started to make an impact Sarah put Sammy through whose great shot was just over the bar. Keeley joined the action and nearly got on the end of 2 great passes to score but again after forcing a series of corners Sammy in a break away attack hit a great shot which the goal keeper could not hold and Sian pounced to make it 4-2.

Elise and Jo joined the fray in defence and quickly saw action but unfortunately for Hitchin Harvesters delivered the perfect reply and in a rare attack scored again 5-2 and a lesson in finishing was being delivered.

Sammy and Sarah again set loose by good work from Steph and Louisa hit shots just over. The chances were being created but just going wide and on the break up popped the Harvester strikers and again scored to make it 6-2.

A good team effort and the team played some very good football. The scoreline perhaps favoured Harvesters who delivered a tough lesson in finishing but Hitchin showed a lot of spirit and courage not to let their heads drop and every one played their part for which they should be applauded.

Next match Harvesters again in a round 1 of the U15 knock out cup. Now we have lulled them into a false sense of security time to gain revenge.

Girl of the match

Lauren, despite the scoreline outstanding in defence and gave it her all as did the rest of the team to be fair.
