On a cold and grey morning and with no league or cup games scheduled this weekend, the Belles U10s took the opportunity to give Garston a run out as they have not started their season yet, due to player registration problems.

A squad of eight travelled down to Watford and with the regular goalkeeper missing it was an ideal opportunity to try players in different positions. Ciara, who was captain for the day, won the toss and elected to kick off. Straight from that kick off the Belles went on the attack and within seconds had their first shot on goal by Sadie. Hitchin kept up the pressure on the Garston goal and only some wayward shooting kept the score blank. The breakthrough came in the 9th minute with Emily doing what she does best, dribbling through the defence, before calmly slotting home. Nicole, who was standing in as goalie, was not tested once during the first half thanks mainly to strong tackling in midfield from Sasa and good solid defensive work from Meg. The Belles had wave after wave of attacks, with Emily running down the wings and Sadie powering her way through the middle but the score somehow managed to stay 1-0 until the break.

Half time 0-1

Ursula took over in goal for the second half with Nicole moving out on pitch. The half time talk must have worked wonders, as Sadie got her first of the game 2 minutes in with a trademark left foot shot after turning the defence inside out. The comment from the U10s manager at half time about scoring 5 in the second half was turning out to be prophetic as two minutes later Emily scored her second and Hitchin’s’ 3rd after beating the Garston defence with her speed and again stroking the ball past the keeper. Nicole then got in on the act with a well taken goal in the 32nd minute before Sasa scored on 36 with a powerful shot. Jess went agonisingly close late on, with an Emily style run, beating several players down the right hand wing before getting off a shot which ran just wide of the goal. In-between all the actual goals, shots continued to rain down on the Garston goal and credit must go to the Garston goalkeeper who made several fine, one handed saves from goalbound shots and stopped Hitchin from amassing double figures. Sadie then wrapped it up at 6, with yet another mazy run through the Garston defence.

It’s a measure of how far this team has come in such a short time that some of the players we’re actually upset at their performance even though they’d scored themselves, made goals for their teammates and helped stop the opposition from scoring whilst scoring 6! With attitude like that ,this team can only get even stronger!
