Woburn Lionesses 8 v 2 Hitchin Hearts Belles (Friendly)

The Belles, without a league or cup game this weekend, travelled up to Milton Keynes to take on the Woburn Lionesses in a friendly game. A big “thank you” must go out to Dave Illot, who provided the St Christopher’s’ school mini bus for the day, so that the team could all travel up together as a team, just like the “Big Boys” do. Thankfully the heavy rain that had started the day had stopped by the time the team arrived at Wavendon.

The Lionesses currently sit atop their league, as do the Belles, and most thought that it was going to be a close game. However, the Belles endeavoured to produce a “defensive Halloween Horror show” and found themselves 2 -0 down with in the first four minutes, both goals coming from lapses at the back. A minute later, the Belles did manage to pull a goal back when they were awarded a free kick 12yards out, and although Woburn pulled everyone back and set up a wall, there was only going to be one outcome as Sadie powered her left footed kick in to the back of the net. The Belles continued to push for an equaliser with Sadie and Emily having shots just off target and Sasa relishing her role of playing up front being unlucky not to hit the target after a tremendous run from her own area and beating most of the Lionesses at least once! Any hopes of a comeback though, were quashed, as Woburn hit 3 more before the break, again all coming from lapses in The Belles concentration.

Half time: 5-1

The second half started off a bit quieter than the first with Nicole taking over in goal. All credit to the Belles whose heads could have gone down but they continued to try and play the football that they have played so far this season. Unfortunately, Woburn’s girls equalled their efforts, and were rewarded with yet another 3 goals but this time mainly from good passing play. The Belles heads still wouldn’t go down and they continued to press forward for another goal, and this duly came for Emily after dribbling the ball through the middle of the Woburn defence. The girls celebrated as though it was the winning goal in a cup final. The final whistle blew with the score at 8-2 but the girls knew that they weren’t six goals worse than Woburn and they are looking forward to a return game at Ickleford sometime in the New Year. Hopefully the defensive lapses will be rectified in time for next weeks trip to St Albans and the girls can get back to their winning ways. The singing and laughter on the bus on the way home showed that the girls had still enjoyed their day out despite the score line.
