Hitchin Hearts Belles 5 v 1 Watford (League Cup)

02767 hits since November 15, 2009

After last weeks excellent league win at St Albans, the U10s turned their attentions to cup football with the visit of Watford Ladies to Chambers Lane. The Belles won their league game at Watford earlier in season quite comfortably, with Watford missing a couple of regular players but as we all know cup football has a knack of turning the form book on it’s head and the girls were under no illusions that this was going to be an easy game. Meg was captain for the game after last weeks stalwart defensive display. Mercifully, the atrocious weather of the previous night decided to abate for awhile and the game kicked off in calm, sunny conditions.

The first few minutes showed that Watford had come to put up a fight and although the Belles played some nice flowing football they couldn’t break down a stubborn Watford defence. However, in the 7th minute Watford failed to clear their area and Sadie got her foot to the ball during the scramble and managed to poke the ball home from close range to put the Belles 1 up. Tanya in the Hitchin goal didn’t have a serious shot to save but her distribution from kicks was excellent. The Belles continued pushing forward but Watford managed to stop the Belles from scoring again until 3 minutes before the break when a fantastic pass from Kinnari found Sadie unmarked in the area and she struck hers, and the Belles, second.

Half time: 2-0

The Belles came out firing on all cylinders for the second half and it only took 2 minutes for them to add to their tally. A great tackle on the edge of her own area by Ursula was followed by an equally good pass up the line to Kinnari who again managed to pick out the unmarked Sadie to blast her hat-trick clinching third goal. Four minutes later the Belles were even further ahead, when after Sadie won the ball from a throw in, passed to Sasa who then hit a long pass with the outside of her foot to Emily on the left wing who cut inside and placed the ball past the keeper with her left foot. Watford, far from being demoralised, continued to look for a goal and were rewarded after 38 minutes when a mix up in the Hitchin defence allowed their forward in to the area with the ball and she made no mistake, knocking it past Tanya to make it 4-1. Hitchin though, weren’t finished either, and with 2 minutes remaining Sadie hit a remarkable shot from wide out on the left wing which the Watford keeper could only watch as it sailed over her head in to the net to complete the scoring and see the Belles safely through to the next round.

For the second week running the effort put in by all the players earned them their just rewards. Tanya’s distribution from kicks has already been mentioned but Ursula’s second half performance with her terrier like tackling also merits recognition along with Megs usual quality (captains) performance,Sasas intelligent passing and movement, Kinnaris two assists and ,of course ,who could ignore Sadies four goals (for the second time this season!) but this weeks PoG goes to Emily who ran her legs off all match and showed that football is a team game and as much as we’d all like to score hatfuls of goals week in and week out the support that you give other players in terms of options and creativity is as vitally important...and did I mention her left footed goal?!
