Hitchin Hearts Belles 5 v 2 Berkhamsted Raiders (Friendly)

00719 hits since November 22, 2009

Another free weekend gave the U10s another opportunity to play against different teams from other leagues, this time in the form of Berkhamsted Raiders from The Bucks League and also on a Sunday morning. Emily was the only absentee this weekend as she was suffering with a bug, but with 10 players to choose from this was the ideal time to try different players in positions they wouldn’t normally play in. Kinnari was captain for the day and Berkhamsted chose to kick off. Unfortunately as the game kicked off the rain gods decided to send their representatives to the game as well and it steadily increased as the game went on.

The Belles moved the ball about well during the first few minutes but with the greasy surface and some excellent, strong defending by the Raiders defence, the Belles couldn’t find a way through to goal. That changed in the 15th minute when Sadie struck home from wide out on the right to put the Belles ahead. The girls continued to push forward and Sadie was unlucky not to double the lead, when , after a solo run down the left hand wing that started in her own half , she watched as her fiercely struck shot hit the side netting. Nicole was also unlucky not to get herself on the score sheet as she had a lovely chance to put the Belles 2 up. Wave after wave of Belles attacks came, mostly originating from midfield where Kinnari and Sasas through balls opened up play, but the Belles couldn’t capitalise on their domination and that’s how the half ended.

Half time: 1-0

With the rain getting heavier and the pitch getting slicker, most observers would have thought that the score would be remaining as it was with the Belles holding on to their slender lead, but a minute in to the second half the Belles scored with Sadie claiming her second of the game after good work from Ursula in midfield. Four minutes later and Sadie had her second hat-trick in two weeks as she again found the back of the Raiders net with a well hit left foot shot. Still the rain fell and substitutions were being made, not due to injury or fatigue, but because of the cold and wet! Sadie still wasn’t finished, and added her fourth with 12 minutes remaining. The Raiders still looked for a goal though and they continued to press forward only to be thwarted either by the defence or Tanya in goal, who was probably the coldest and wettest of the Belles and with the least to do. Sadie then went off, probably to the relief of the Berkhamsted girls, but Sasa then took over where Sadie left off, and she hit the Belles fifth of the morning after good running up the left. Tanya then pulled off an excellent double save from the Raiders centre forward who was clean through on goal, stopping the ball twice with her legs before pouncing on the loose ball. Sasa and Kinnari both went close at the other end only being thwarted by good saves from the Raiders keeper. With some of the girls looking as though they were on the verge of hypothermia, the last of the substitutions were made and the Raiders finally and justifiably made the breakthrough that their efforts deserved and scored two quick consolation goals, both from fast breaks from midfield, before the referee blew up for full time and a well deserved cup of tea/coffee/squash for all concerned.
