Hitchin Hearts Belles 2 v 2 Borehamwood

00748 hits since November 29, 2009

After last weeks friendly against Berkhamsted, the girls had thawed out and dried out sufficiently to return to league action against Borehamwood today at Chambers Lane. The game turned out to be one of the most exciting games of the season so far.

The Belles U10s knew that they were in for a tough game today and they weren’t to be disappointed. Tanya was captain, after her magnificent performance between the sticks in the cold and rain last week. Borehamwood won the toss and chose to kick off and immediately went on the offensive. Within the first 4 minutes Tanya had pulled off two great saves to stop Borehamwood taking the lead and the Belles knew they were in a scrap. It didn’t help matters when Emily had to go off after the first couple of minutes after a particularly hard challenge left her limping. Gradually though, the Belles managed to put a few decent passes together and were unlucky not to score as Sadie tested the B’hamwood keeper with a great strike from the edge of the area. The keeper, again came to their rescue a couple of more times before the break with fantastic stops , yet again from Sadie which would have put the Belles well in front at the break and the same player was desperately unlucky to see her lob, from 20 yards, narrowly miss the target. B’hamwood were also unlucky to get on the score-sheet, thanks to some great last-ditch defending, with Meg breaking up several promising attacks. However the half ended goalless.

Half time: 0-0

The half-time talk got the Belles fired up for the second half, but it was Borehamwood who took the lead 4 minutes after the re-start and somewhat against the run of play, as good passing ripped open the Belles and their attacker was able to score .The Belles “never-say die” attitude then kicked in and they went all out looking for an equaliser. Sadie again went close and Emily brought another good save from the opponent’s goalie. Eight minutes later though, the Belles did equalise, with Sadie taking advantage of a quick throw in from Sasa and scoring with a well placed shot to make the scores level. Again, Meg came to the rescue, halting several sorties from the Borehamwood forwards, and Sadie, and more noticeably Sasa, came close to putting the Belles ahead for the first time after a great run up the left wing, but she was unable to find a finish worthy of her efforts. Unfortunately, it was Borehamwood who were to take the lead after another quick break caught the Belles cold and their striker made no mistake with just the keeper to beat. Tanya was injured during that goal and Nicole took over for the rest of the game. Borehamwoods lead was to last for only a matter of seconds, though, as a great run up the wing from Emily enabled her to find Sadie, unmarked in the box, and Sadie calmly slotted home to make it 2-2.Both sides had chances to wrap it up, with probably Emily having the best chance to get a result, but her shot was well held by Borehamwood’s goal keeper. A draw was a fair result and it would have been unjust to have an outright winner.

Yet again another great game of football from the under 10s at Ickleford although credit must go to Borehamwood who brought a great passing game to Chambers Lane and must consider themselves serious title contenders. The U10s showed that they can cope with pressure as they soaked up a great amount, especially during the first half, but still managed to counter attack and ground out a very creditable result.
