Bedwell Rangers 1 v 10 Hitchin Hearts Belles

00700 hits since December 9, 2009

The Belles played their last fixture before the Christmas break at Bedwell Rangers, still unbeaten and top of the league. Could they end the year on a high or was the pressure starting to get to them? Well, the girls answered that emphatically with an awesome display of passing football and some ruthless finishing to record their best ever win.

As is now customary for away games, we all travelled down to Stevenage together on the mini bus, kindly acquired by Emilyís dad (thanks Dave). Thankfully it was yet another sunny, dry morning and not too cold, and there was also a full squad of players to choose from.

Meg was captain for the match and although the Belles had beaten Bedwell on the first day of the season, the girls were expecting a tough game. The first couple of minutes were quite even but the Belles started to get their passing game together and in the 5th minute a well worked move, starting with a pass from Sasa out wide to Emily, found Sadie in the area. Sadie managed to shake off her marker and hit the back of the net with her first goal of the day. Ursula then opened her account for the season, 7 minutes later, when she put the Belles 2 up after fine passing in the area from Sadie and Emily. 6 minutes later and the Belles went 3 up from the penalty spot after Emily was uprooted in the box by a frustrated Bedwell defender. Sadie hit the keeper with her spot kick but managed to net the rebound. Although they were 3 goals down Bedwell still tried to push forward and great distribution from the Bedwell keeper gave their forwards a chance to probe deep but, as usual, Meg was there to mop up and she was admirably assisted by Jess and Ciara who both played very calm balls out of defence. Yet more Hitchin pressure saw Sadie rattle the bar and also bring out the best of the Bedwell keeper with a well hit free kick, she also made brave saves at the feet of oncoming players to keep the score 3-0 at halftime.

Half time: 0-3

As the second half started, there was no clue to the drama that was to unfold as the Belles pressed forward with good passing from Kinnari and Nicole, opening up the defence and Sadie, Kinnari and Emily all going close. But it was to be at the other end where the game fizzed in to life, as this time Bedwell were awarded a penalty. Tanya was not to be beaten though and gathered the spot kick safely in to her body. However, 3 minutes later Bedwell were to score, as good passing from their midfield set free one of their forwards who managed to slot the ball home to make it 3-1. That goal was seen as a wake up call, and the Belles duly responded, with Sadie completing her hat trick a minute later. Sasa then got on the score sheet 3 minutes later with a great solo goal, taking it all the way from the edge of her own area before placing it past the Bedwell keeper. Yet another player, Kinnari, then scored her first goal of the season, getting her foot to the ball first after a loose one popped out from the crowd in the area. Emily then got her first of the game, from yet another scramble in the area, before she got her second, 2 minutes later, after a great through ball by Ursula. Changing goalkeeper, taking off the strikers and playing players out of their normal positions didnít slow down the flood of goals from the Belles and they continued to press with Nicole and Kinnari unlucky to find the target and Victoria just unable to find the finish that would have capped her fine run. Ursula then helped herself to her second and the Belles 9th before Emily brought up her hat trick with 2 minutes to go and complete the scoring.

The girls really showed today how far they have come in such a short time with a wonderful passing style of play. Every single girl out there deserved, at some point, to be Player of the Game but Ursula just edged it with not only her two goals but also her passing, tackling and general team work.
