Hitchin Hearts Belles 3 v 0 Bedwell Rangers

After an 8 week layoff due to the Christmas break and the recent inclement weather, normal service was resumed at Chambers Lane , with the Belles running out comfortable 3 – 0 winners against a vastly improved Bedwell Rangers team in the quarter final of the County Cup.

Having beaten Bedwell 10-1 in the last game they played, in early December, the Belles were favourites to progress to the semis, but as we all know football and cup football in particular, is a “funny old game” and the girls didn’t go in to this game lightly.

The Belles, captained by Ursula after her two goal show in that Bedwell game , won the toss and had the kick off. Within the first minute Sadie had tested the Bedwell keeper with a low hard shot that the goalie did very well to hold on to. The girls fine creative passing play brought on wave after wave of Belles attacks and, but for the Bedwell keeper, they could have been 3 up in the first 5 minutes. Bedwell, meantime, tried to press but were thwarted each time by a combination of midfield and defence, with Meg outstanding as usual , mopping up anything that looked remotely threatening. The breakthrough finally came in the 12th minute, after good work by Sasa down the left found Emily on the edge of the box who then calmly slotted the ball through to the ever dangerous Sadie making no mistake this time ,of placing the ball past the keeper. Two minutes later, after a series of Hitchin corners, the same three players combined again with an almost identical goal to put the Belles 2-0 up. As the half wore on it looked odds on that the Belles would increase their lead but the Bedwell keeper kept them in the game with more great saves from Sadie and Emily.

Emily on the breakNo messing with Kinnari

Half Time 2- 0

The second half saw the introduction of Jess in to defence alongside Meg and Nicole replaced Emily up front. The Belles continued with their flowing passing football and were nearly rewarded with a third goal, with Nicole being put through, only to take one touch too many. The Bedwell defence put in a great second half performance with some great well timed tackling in the area, preventing goals from Sadie ,Sasa, Kinnari and Ursula. On the occasions that Bedwell did break, the Belles defence coped admirably, with Jess playing a very calm, mature game with great distribution and taking on the opponents defence as well! The Belles did eventually get the reward their efforts deserved when Kinnari latched on to the ball in the Bedwell area and scored her 2nd goal in successive games. Sasa later went close with another of her mazy runs and Jess also had a chance to score her first of the season, but at the final whistle it remained 3-0.

So, no repeat of the margin of victory of the last time these two teams played, Bedwell were a much improved team with a great goalkeeper and some clever defenders, but the Belles played some of their most intelligent football of the season so far, and most of those present would agree that it was a joy to watch.
