Hitchin Hearts Belles 2 v 2 Garston

00715 hits since February 15, 2010

After their magnificent display last week against the same team, many would have been forgiven for thinking that this would be a win for the Belles. The only trouble with thinking like that is that nobody told Garston, who gave a mighty performance and were so close to leaving Ickleford with all 3 points.

Early morning snow showers had threatened to spoil the morning but at kick off time there was no sign of any snow, unfortunately there was no sign of two of the Garston players either, who were held up in traffic on the A1! It was agreed that Hitchin would start with 6 and field the seventh player when the missing Garston Ladies arrived. Sasa was captain for the day after her 3 goals last week but Kinnari and Emily, who played influential roles in last weeks game were both absent. Garston had kick off, but the Belles were first on the attack with Sadie, on her return from illness, inches wide in the second minute. Garston were definitely having more possession this week and their goal kicks were proving to be a major concern for the Belles defence and midfield. Nicole was having a splendid half down the wing and time after time her runs and through balls were creating chances for Hitchin. The Belles finally took the lead in the 12th minute when Sadie found the back of the net after latching on to a great kick from Tania. Sasa had a chance to double the score 3 minutes later but shot wide and Nicole created another couple of chances for Sadie as well. The score remained 1-0 at the interval.

Half time: 1-0

The Belles knew that they had to try and build on that slender lead but good defensive work from Garston and some great goalkeeping kept the Belles forward line at bay. With 6 minutes of the second half gone, Garston got the reward that their players deserved, when they equalised after a Belles defensive lapse. Five minutes later and the unthinkable happened as Garston took the lead after fantastic work from their forward. Hitchin now found themselves in a rare position this season, that of trailing in a game. They continued to push forward looking for the equaliser but Garston hung on doggedly. However the Belles determination paid off as Sadie equalised in the 35th minute, with her 30th goal of the season, after a great run up the right wing , and pass from Ursula. The Belles still had time to look for a winner but Sasa was desperately unlucky to put the ball wide after one of her trademark runs and Sadie also shot wide. Garston though, always looked dangerous on the break and it took some stout defending in the last few minutes, from Jess in particular, to ensure that the scores remained level until the final whistle.

All in all, a fair result with a great performance from Garston. The most pleasing aspect from the Belles viewpoint is that they still remain unbeaten, competitively, this season and when they do trail they don’t let their heads go down and continue seek an equaliser or even a winning goal.

Team: Tanya, Jess, Meg “The Wall”, Ciara, Ursula, Nic-no goal this week, Sasa, Victoria, Sadie

Player of the Game: Nicole- her runs down the wings and her crosses were perfect.
