Hitchin Hearts Belles 0 v 2 St. Albans

A disappointing performance this morning , saw the Belles U10s taste defeat for the first time this season in a competitive game and all but end their slim chance of taking the league title.

After being kindly presented with Sport Relief bands by Kinnari before the game, the Belles won the toss and , Meg, the captain for the day chose to have kick off. Both teams started off rather tentatively with the defences breaking up early attacks. With four of the Belles girls feeling under the weather, it was hard work trying to break down the St Albans defence and it wasn’t until the 15th minute that the Belles managed to get their first shot on target after good work from Emily found Sadie unmarked. Two minutes later, Hitchin very nearly took the lead after a through ball from Nicole released Sadie, who rattled the post with a thunderous drive from the edge of the area. As the half wore on it looked as though honours would be even at the interval but St Albans had different ideas and scored with almost the last kick of the half, when their centre forward was sent clear by a long through ball and she did very well in getting to the ball first and placing the ball firmly past the Belles keeper.

You're not getting past JessThis is gonna hurt!!

Half time: 0-1

St Albans could sense victory at the start of the second half and only good defensive work by Meg and Jess prevented St Albans from building on their lead. Although the Belles were struggling they kept their heads up and continued to push forward looking for an equaliser with Sadie and Emily shooting wide and several other promising attacks being well dealt with by an impressive St Albans defence. Midway through the second half disaster struck as St Albans managed to score their second of the game with yet another quick break. Now two goals down and clearly suffering for the cause, the Belles still tried to find the energy to summon up a goal with Sadie shooting wide after being put through by Ciara and Kinnari and then Sasa shooting wide after a solo run from her own half. Emily also had a chance to pull one back after a good run up the wing. Ciara , Jess and Meg soaked up a couple of St Albans attacks and Tanya managed to smother and hold on to another shot. With the final whistle bringing relief to the ailing ,as well the Belles first loss of the season, the girls were first to congratulate the St Albans girls on their deserved victory.

At the post match de-brief, the Belles showed a very mature approach in accepting defeat but decided that “they didn’t like the feeling of losing” and as a team vowed to get back to winning ways next time out.

Defeat was going to happen sometime but the girls took it well. They knew they were second best BUT more importantly knew why they were second best.
