Hitchin Hearts Belles 5 v 1 Knebworth (Friendly Fixture)

00815 hits since March 15, 2010

With no league or cup action scheduled for this weekend the Belles took the opportunity of the free day to renew an old rivalry with a friendly against Knebworth. Last season Knebworth ran away with the U9s league, beating the Belles 9-1 in their first encounter but with the Belles gaining some consolation by being the only team to inflict defeat on them all season, with a hard fought 4-3 victory in the very last game.

After last weekends below par performance with the defeat against St Albans, the Belles were looking to bounce back and return to winning ways. A fully fit squad was available for the game as all of the girls had recovered from their collective ailments of the previous week. Jess, after being so close on several occasions lately, finally got to wear the captains’ armband for the game. Nicole began the game in goal with Tanya moving in to defence. The Belles had kick off and were on the offensive immediately with Sadie and Kinnari linking well in the first few minutes. Four minutes in to the game and the Belles were 1 up after good work from Sadie found Kinnari unmarked, who placed her shot firmly past the Knebworth keeper. Sadie and Kinnari both had chances to increase the lead but we’re unlucky to put wide of the target. Emily came on as sub and immediately made an impact in the 8th minute as her speed opened up the Knebworth defence allowing Sadie to hit her first of the game. The midfield of Ciara and Ursula kept Knebworth at bay and on the rare occasions they did get through, Meg and Tanya mopped up comfortably. Emily broke her duck in the 13th minute with her speed yet again causing havoc, to make it 3-0. Sasa then had a chance to make it four with a fantastic run from deep inside her own half in to the Knebworth area but, although her shot beat the defence and the keeper, it agonisingly struck the post before bobbling along the goal line and away to safety. Whatever combination the Belles midfield played, whether Ciara, Ursula, Kinnari, Nicole, Jess or Sasa, they we’re always in command either stopping attacks or creating openings for the Belles strikers. That 4th goal wasn’t long in coming as in the 17th minute Sadie hit her second of the match , to make it 4-0 at halftime.

Half time: 4-0

Nicole vacated the goal for the second half with Tanya returning between the sticks. Jess, relishing her captains role for the day made several quality interceptions, deputising for Meg at the back, to stop Knebworth having any meaningful shots on target. Ciara had a great chance to make it 5 midway through the second half when the ball was rolled in front of her by Sadie in the area, but couldn’t quite get over the ball to get the shot away. The Belles mounted attack after attack with the midfield calling the shots, with some great tackling and passing from Ursula, Ciara and Kinnari but most notably from Sasa, who was unlucky to be penalised after a solid, crunching tackle halted a Knebworth attacker in her tracks. Nicoles wide runs, Emily’s speed and Sadies power were also causing problems for the Knebworth defenders. Knebworth did manage to get a goal back after a period of pressure shortly after with a well taken shot. However, the Belles finally got that fifth goal as Sadie notched yet another hat-trick after a great, firmly hit through ball from Ursula found her and she put the ball in the net from an acute angle.

The final whistle sounded with the score at 5-1, a fair result after the Belles had threatened to run riot, especially in the first half. The girls had firmly put last weeks poor performance and its associated disappointment behind them with this win, and hopefully they’ll carry it over for next weekends league clash with Watford.
