Bury Rangers 3 v 0 Hitchin Hearts Belles

A beautiful, warm spring morning was the backdrop for a fantastic game of football by two very good U10s teams at Ware this morning. The Belles were looking for revenge for their last game at Bury 3 weeks ago , when they were outplayed by a tactically superior team and had their league title hopes dashed with a 3-1 defeat.

Tanya, after her goal scoring heroics in that game, was captain for todays game. The Belles lined up in a 2-3-1 formation with Emily starting in the lone striker role. Bury had kick off but the Hitchin girls were straight in to them and within a minute of the start could have been a goal up after Emily picked Sasa out in the box but Sasa just fired wide of the target. The Belles continued to pile on the pressure and refused to let Bury settle on the ball, which was in total contrast to the previous game. Jess played a great ball over the top but, unfortunately, it was just a tad too hard for Sadie to latch on to and eventually ran out of play for a goal kick. Bury tried to break but were usually held up in midfield by Jess, Sasa or Ciara and on the rare occasion they did get through, Meg was in place to make sure they didn’t get any further. All the girls were tackling as though their lives depended on it and prevented Bury making the breakthrough. However in the 14th minute that was to change as The Belles thought they had done enough to clear a corner but it fell straight to a Bury player who slotted home from outside the area to put Bury 1-0 up. Hitchin kept their heads up despite going a goal behind and looked for an equaliser before half time. A good tackle and pass from Nicole set Emily free but she was stopped in her tracks by the Bury defence.Ciara had a half chance late on but unfortunately was swamped by defenders before she had a chance to get a shot lined up. Sasa kept plugging away in midfield trying to find a ball through to the attackers but as the half drew to an end the Belles still couldn’t find the net.

Half time: 1-0

Not a lot could be said at half time, except for “carry on”, as the girls were doing everything that had been asked of them before the game. Most of the Belles possession was coming through the midfield with Ursula, Kinnari and Sasa putting in some great tackles to win the ball from Bury but try as they might they still couldn’t break down a stubborn Bury defence. 8 minutes in to the second half the Belles went 2 down as another shot from distance hit the back of the net. Here were the Belles playing some of their best football of the season, against arguably the best team in the league, and somewhat unjustly, trailing 2-0. Still the Belles tried to attack with Ursula and Sasa putting in strong challenges in midfield to keep Bury at bay. Emily’s speed was Burys biggest concern and she nearly found a way through after being sent clear by Sasa but she was finally outnumbered by Burys impressive defenders. Five minutes from time Bury scored their last and probably best goal of the game as their substitute battled for the ball down the left, beat the Belles defender and put the ball in the net from a narrow angle. The Belles would have been forgiven for letting their heads go down and throwing in the towel, but still they battled as a team to get what would be a deserved consolation goal. Three minutes before the end Tanya pulled off an astonishing point blank reflex save from the Bury forward to tip the ball over the bar and away to safety. Sadie had two late chances to pull a goal back but the final whistle sounded with the score at 3-0.

Although the score suggested a comfortable win for Bury, it was far from it, and this wasn’t a three goal game. The Belles hassled and harried Bury straight from the kick off and didn’t stop until the final whistle went. One quality goal and two fortunate, long range strikes, were the only difference today and all 10 Hitchin Belles girls can hold their heads high after todays performance and hopefully not be too disappointed with the result.

Now you know why Megs called The Wall Great game, girls Tanya in goal

Team: Tanya, Meg(The Wall), Jess, Ciara, Nicole, Kinnari, Sasa, Ursula, Sadie, Emily.

Player of the Game: The hardest decision yet, as this was easily the best team performance of the season, despite the result. 5 or 6 were in the running and all 10 deserve a MASSIVE pat on the back, but Sasa just edges it this week with her tough tackling and intelligent passing being at the heart of the majority of the Belles good moves.
