Borehamwood 3 v 0 Hitchin Hearts Belles

After a long 9 months, the Belles finally drew a line under a season that looked so promising, with a typical end of season display , resulting in a 3-0 defeat at title contenders, Borehamwood.

Borehamwood needed to win this game to keep their title hopes alive and put them on equal points with Bury Rangers at the top of the table. The Belles werenít going to go in to this game lightly because there was no silverware to play for. On the contrary, the Belles wanted a good result and performance to finally push the memories of the previous weekends cup final heartbreak firmly in to the past. However, they knew this would be no easy task as both previous meetings between the two sides had been tough affairs.

Jess was captain for the day after her brilliant cup final performance. Borehamwood got the game underway and chose to kick up the slope for the first half and immediately went on the offensive. Meg and Jess combined well to repel those first early attacks. It wasnít long though before Borehamwood did take the lead, 4 minutes to be exact, with a well worked goal which left Hitchin chasing shadows. The Belles, as usual though, didnít let their heads drop, and continued to press forward. Sadie shooting narrowly wide and also taking a shot from near the halfway line ,when it may have been more beneficial taking the ball a bit closer to the goal! Emily managed to break through but had no support and Kinnari took one touch too many on the edge of the area .Borehamwood tried to increase their lead and came very close twice ,hitting the post on both occasions. The introduction of Nicole gave the Belles more options down the wings but still they couldnít come up with the break through goal. Five minutes before halftime Borehamwood did score their second, with an almost identical goal to their first, Hitchin swarming towards one player leaving others unmarked and being duly punished as one of those unmarked players swept the ball in to the goal. Two minutes later the Belles had a great chance to put themselves back in the game, when Sadie made a fantastic run down the left wing before putting a great ball across the area which only needed the slightest of touches to turn it goal bound, but unfortunately it managed to evade any Belles boots.

Half time: 2-0

The halftime talk asked the players to up their game and within a minute of the restart the Belles showed they had taken it onboard as Emily hit the Borehamwood bar from the most ridiculous of angles. Borehamwood answered almost immediately, going up the other end and putting the ball in the back of the net with a speculative long shot. With the score at 3-0 the Belles could have let this game run away from them, but the defence and especially Ciara, held firm. Sasa then had a chance of glory with a long range free kick but her powerful ,Sadiesque shot, went agonisingly inches wide. The second half was more evenly matched with the Belles pushing to attack but coming up short in the last third. The defence was now managing to keep a lid on the Borehamwood forwards, with Meg and Ciara forming a solid partnership, the latter impressing with her tackling, passing and even taking time for a step over.Try as they might though ,the Belles couldnít get a shot on target and thatís how the score remained until the final whistle blew.

So another season over, unfortunately no trophies to show for it, a little disappointing seeing as the girls were in the running for a treble until the last few weeks, but there is no disguising the fact that this has been a very rewarding season in terms of effort and commitment, resulting in the girls fantastic ,passing style of play .Some absolutely remarkable games of football have been witnessed since last September and , hopefully, there will be plenty more to come when the new season kicks off.

Team: Tanya, Meg (The Wall), Jess, Ciara, Kinnari, Sasa, Nicole, Emily, Sadie.

Player of the Game: One performance really stood out, head and shoulders above the rest, and that was Ciara. Very cool, calm and collected in defence ...and great tricks!!
