One Tuesday evening, way back in September 2009, during a torrential downpour, a group of young girls began a long, nine month journey together in which they all experienced the highs and lows, the triumphs and disappointments but, ultimately, shared the fun and friendship which comes from playing the country’s fastest growing sport, girls football and being part of a team....The Hitchin Belles under 10s! This is their seasons’ story:

Early September ’09 – The Hitchin Belles Under 10s train as a team for the first time. Consisting of the remnants of the previous years under-9s and, importantly, several new faces. During the aforementioned rain storm the thought “ I’ll be surprised if any of these turn up again” was known to pass through the coaching / managements minds!! Remarkably, they all came back, in good health too which was a surprise, for pre-season friendlies v Bury (2-1 defeat) and Watford (1-1 draw).

19th September v Bedwell– First league game of the season and a comfortable 4-0 win with goals from Sadie (2) and Emily(2). The Bedwell goalie making a fine save in the last minute from a “Sadie screamer”.

3rd October Bedwell Festival- First up were Bury, and 2 goals from Sadie the first direct from a free kick was enough to see off a good Bury side with a 2-1win. Watford were next with Sadie and Emily scoring in a 2-0 win. A 1-1 draw completed the group games with Emily putting the Bells ahead before a poor goal kick led to ‘Woods equaliser.

10th October v Watford- A beautiful, warm, sunny day and the Belles went on the rampage at Watford. Sadie scored 4,the most notable being a 20 yard ,left footed shot from wide out on the wing. Emily scored twice and Ciara scored her first for the club.

17th October v Garston- The goals continued to flow with another 6, this time in a friendly at Garston. Emily and Sadie both scored twice with Sasa and Nicole both opening their accounts.

24th October v Bury Rangers- One of the games of the season with the sides sharing six goals. Trailing 1-0 at the break , Emily equalised soon after, before Sadie hit one of the goals of the season to put the Belles a goal up. However, Bury then scored twice to regain the lead before another Sadie special saved the point. Phew!!

31st October v Woburn Lionesses- This friendly saw the introduction of the newest and most popular member of the squad..The Team Minibus!! Unfortunately it probably had the best game as well, as the Belles were mauled by the Lionesses ( see what I did there?!) in an 8-2 defeat. Goals, from Emily and Sadie being the only bright spots. Best forget about that one!!

6th November v St Albans- Did the girls learn anything from the Woburn game? Yes they did, but it took it’s time coming as they trailed early on and Sadies 2 goals only seemed to have earned a point but Sasa put in a captains performance with a (very) late double, the second of which, she ran almost the length of the pitch before blasting in to the back of the net.

14th November v Watford- Watford again, this time in the league cup and another 4 goal performance from Sadie. Yet again she scored from wide out on the left wing to score another goal of the season contender to get the 5th in a comfortable 5-1 victory. Emily scored the other with her left foot and special mention to Tanya for her distribution in this one.

22nd November v Berkhamstead Raiders- Another friendly, this time against Berhamstead but.. on a Sunday. A freezing cold, soaking wet Sunday at that. Another 4 for Sadie and Sasa getting the 5th, in a 5-2 win. The biggest worry here wasn’t the Berkhamstead forwards it was hypothermia, with substitutions being made before someone drowned!!

28th November v Borehamwood- Another tough league game and the Belles twice had to come from behind for a 2-2 draw, with both goals from Sadie, to salvage a point. A stalwart performance from Meg in defence preventing ‘Wood taking all 3points.

5th December v Bedwell- A 10-1 demolition of Bedwell with Sadie and Emily both scoring hat tricks but the performance of the day going to Ursula who chipped in with 2 as well. Kinnari scored her first of the season and Sasa also got on the score sheet with another long solo run. The manager phoning the coach from the other side of the pitch to try and stop their OWN side from scoring anymore was another of the games highlights!

23rd January v Bedwell- After a long Christmas break and inclement weather the Belles first game of the New Year was a league cup clash against Bedwell, the team they beat 10-1 in their last outing. No repeat of the high score this time but the Belles did run out 3-0 winners with 2 goals from Sadie and another from Kinnari. Jess makes a starring role in defence.

6th February v Garston- The first league meeting of the season between these two and without our regular striker. No need to worry though as Emily , Sasa and Kinnari tore open Garston to record a comfortable 6-0 win. Sasa led the way with her first ever hat trick, Kinnari was close behind with 2 and Nicole scored her first league goal for the club.

13th February v Garston- What a difference a week makes! The return game at Icleford 7 days later nearly proved disastrous as Garston came so close to deservedly winning . Another two Sadie goals eventually sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

20th February v Borehamwood- Probably the most satisfying result of the season was this 3-1 League cup semi final win at Borehamwood..and the coach missed it. Sadies two goals and a third from Kinnari completed this smash and grab and saw The Belles through to their first ever cup final.

6th March v St Albans- A disappointing performance saw the Belles lose their first game of the season 2-0 at home to St Albans. Defeat, we take it on the chin.. and it was March.

13th March v Knebworth- an old nemesis returned in the shape of Knebworth for a Sunday afternoon friendly. But this was a different Knebworth and the Belles were 4 up at halftime thanks to goals from Sadie(2) ,Emily and Kinnari. Another in the second half from Sadie wrapped up a 5-1 win. If only we could have done that last season!

20th March v Watford- A narrow 2-1 win v Watford, notable for Belles first ever headed goal from Sadie (lucky we practiced that in training the previous Tuesday!). Kinnari snatched the winner with minutes remaining.

27th March v Bury- This poor performance and resulting 3-1 defeat ended any slim title hopes the Belles had. After a woeful first half performance that left the Belles 2-0 down, Tanya livened up the proceedings, coming out of goal and scoring with an unstoppable shot past a helpless Bury keeper for another of the goals of the season.

18th April v Bury- The girls returned to Bury for the County Cup Semi Final against a strong Bury side. A totally different performance from the previous meeting ended with the girls losing 3-0.Never a three goal margin, the girls played magnificently!

24th April v St Albans- – The League Cup Final. The girls big day out and a chance of glory. Dominated the game for 39 of the 40 mins.1-0 up thanks to Sadies goal..We all know what happened next (don’t get me started, let it go!!). Suffice to say St Albans ran out 3-1 winners after extra time. Great experience for the girls though. Next year!!

1st May v Borehamwood- Borehamwood needed to win this, the Belles had nothing but pride to play for. Pride was substituted midway through the 2nd half. Borehamwood ran out 3-0 winners.

So that’s it, in a (4 page ) nutshell, how the Hitchin Belles Under 10s season fared.

What started off as a quiet(ish) unassuming team of girls, gathered momentum as they progressed through the season culminating in quite realistic hopes of pulling off a treble of league, league cup and county cup only to be thwarted at the very end. Along the way they’ve made many friends and admirers ,understandable with their entertaining passing brand of football, not only with each other but with the girls and parents/ spectators from other teams. Some may choose not to be here next season and there may be new faces as well but hopefully they will all carry on playing for years to come and will cherish these memories of their time at Hitchin Belles.

So, TANYA, JESS, MEG (The Wall), CIARA, NICOLE, URSULA, KINNARI, SASA, EMILY AND SADIE.... Take a bow, you’ve earned it and deserve it.

Back L-R: Ursula, Emily, Sadie, Tanya, Kinnari
Front L-R : Ciara,Sasa, Jess, Meg, Nicole

Thank you all for a wonderfully entertaining and rewarding season.
