Garston Ladies U15 6 v 1 Hitchin Hearts Belles

00620 hits since November 8, 2009

Hitchin’s second game of the season against table topping Garston ended as the first had done, in a heavy defeat. However the 6-1 score-line does not really reflect how the game went, Hitchin were let down by a number of sloppy mistakes that allowed Garston to take control.

With 12 players available Hitchin lined up in a classic 4-4-2 formation. The main change from the previous week saw Beth starting in attack rather than defence. The Garston pitch was extremely small and narrow with small goals. Clearly Garston were used to these conditions but it was certainly very different to the large home pitch of Hitchin. The game started at a frantic pace and Hitchin deservedly took the lead after only 2 minutes. Maddie played an excellent through ball to Beth whose first touch was good allowing her to fire high into the goal. Hitchin continued to press and Beth nearly scored again. Hitchin however could not hold on the lead and on 6 minutes some good passing play from Garston ended in an easy goal.

Hitchin responded well to being pegged back and in the next passage of the game created the best chances. On 8 minutes Sarah tried fired in a shot from long range which went just wide. Hitchin forced a number of corners but these were defended comfortably by Garston. Whilst Hitchin was enjoying more possession and chances than their opponents, Garston looked dangerous on the break and Carmen and Jess were needed to break up attacks. Molly also was using her area well. On 17 minutes a corner to Garston created a great scoring chance only for the shot to smash against the post. It was end to end play with Beth again going close from an excellent pass by Dani. On 22 minutes Sophie fired in a corner and Sarah met the ball with her head only to see hitting the top of the bar. Straight after this play, Maddie played another superb ball from midfield to Heather whose cross-shot was well smothered by the Garston goalkeeper.

Hitchin was to regret these missed opportunities as they went behind on 27 minutes in unfortunate circumstances. Carmen, who as usual had been so solid at the back, missed a chance to clear and Garston pounced to score past Molly. 2-1 and it could have been worse seconds later, Molly braving blocking another golden chance for the home team. On 31 minutes a Garston attacker unleashed a wicked shot from distance but Molly made a beautiful save pushing the ball over the bar. Hitchin was still creating chances, Sophie going close on 32 minutes. Hitchin ended the half the better of the two teams, Leah and Sarah both going close.

Halftime arrived with the score at 2-1 and it has been a closely fought game with everything up for grabs in the second half. Clearly it was important for Hitchin to get the next goal! Garston started the second period more positively than Hitchin forcing a number of corners. Hitchin was still able to produce some attacking play but not clear goal scoring opportunities. On 59 minutes Garston made it 3-1 with a great goal on the break. Within a minute it was 4-1 and it this goal can only be put down to a goalkeeping error. Hitchin again rallied with Maddie creating good attacking chances with through balls from midfield. Sophie again went close on 68 minutes hitting the side-netting.

On 68 minutes Garston made it 5 and again it was a weak goal. On 74 minutes an excellent long-range shot went high over Molly into the roof of the net to make it 6-1. At this stage of the game it was all one way and Garston were pushing for more goals though to Hitchin’s credit they stuck to their task. On 76 minutes Molly made another excellent save pushing a strong shot over the bar. Garston continued to push forcing more corners but Hitchin held out and the game ended 6-1.

Whilst the result was disappointing it really should have been much closer, at least 3 of the Garston goals resulted from Hitchin's mistakes. Hitchin also created a number of chances and on another day would have converted more. Player of the match was awarded jointly to Maddie for her creative midfield play, and to Chloe who enjoyed her best game of the season.
