Luton Town Hatters 2 v 4 Hitchin Hearts Belles

00626 hits since November 14, 2009

Following their heavy 0-10 cup defeat last weekend, Hitchin responded with their best performance of the season winning at table topping Luton Town Hatters. It was a classic case of a game of two halves; Hitchin was outstanding in the first half but had to hang on against a battling Luton side in the second. That said the final score of 2-4 was fully deserved.

The game started evenly with both sides creating opportunities, Beth going close after 2 minutes and Dani having to clear well at the other end. Hitchin was creating the most pressure forcing a series of corners. The best chance of the early exchanges actually went to Luton, their player shooting just wide with Molly beaten. The deadlock was broken after 15 minutes and what a goal it was! An excellent interchange between Sarah and Heather on the right allowed Sarah to play the ball across the area to Maddie in space. From about 20 yards out she hit a high looping shot over the Luton goalkeeper and under the crossbar.

Hitchin continued to press forcing a corner on 17 minutes. Sarah fired in a lovely cross which nearly went straight in the goal; an excellent headed clearance by Lutonís tallest player prevented the goal. Whilst Hitchin was on top, chances were coming for Luton as well. Molly made a brave save at the feet of a Luton forward. Hitchin made it 0-2 after 25 minutes and this time it was a scrappy goal; Maddie providing Sophie who managed to bundle the ball over the line. On 30 minutes it was almost another goal, the Luton goalkeeper made an excellent stop against another Maddie shot. On 32 minutes Luton got a goal back, the Hitchin defensive line was breached and Luton scored with a good shot in off the right hand post.

With the score at 1-2 with 8 minutes to half-time it was important for Hitchin to remain positive and how they did so! On 35 minutes it became 1-3 with Maddie again laying on the goal. This time Beth had time and space in the penalty area to ease the ball home from 10 yards. 3 minutes later it was four, another scrappy goal with a penalty area scramble and Maddie fired home from close range.

Hitchin did not want the half to end as they surely would have added to their haul but the whistle went with the Belles 1-4 up. There was no need to reorganise for the second half but it was clear that Luton would come out fighting; for sure the game was not over. The second half took on a completely different picture with Luton holding most of the territory and possession but Hitchin held on well. Whilst Luton pressurised well they did not create many chances. They forced a series of corners and Molly made good saves on 49 minutes and again on 62 minutes. Hitchin on the other hand was no longer creating much in the way of goal scoring chances. The Hitchin defence was raising their game with Dani, Carmen, Leah and Chloe all coping well with the Luton attacks. On 70 minutes Hitchin made a rare attack and it looked like Beth would score but she was adjudged off-side. It did not look like Luton would score but the got one goal back after 75 minutes due to an unfortunate fumble by Molly. This was to be the end of the scoring and the game ended at 2-4 to Hitchin.

The first half performance by Hitchin Belles was highly impressive; when they play like this they can challenge any team in the division. It is unfair to pick out individuals in such a team performance but Hitchinís attacking players were a real handful. Maddie was given the player of the match award, not just for her 2 goals but for her supply to the forwards.
