Hitchin Hearts Belles 0 v 4 Enfield Town

Hitchin suffered another defeat on Sunday losing to a much improved Enfield side. The game was played in quite dreadful conditions with strong wind and heavy rain (my notes got so wet that they are largely illegible, so do not expect a classic match report!) and this could have been a factor in Hitchin’s performance. That said Enfield played very positively and took their chances well in a 0-4 score line.

Hitchin lined up in their usual 4-5-1 formation with the expectation that Sarah, Maddie and Beth would push forward to support lone striker Sophie. With fourteen players available Hitchin could field 3 substitutes including Ilana in what was unfortunately to be her last game for Hitchin Belles.

The game started in torrential rain and it was not a good start for Hitchin. With only 2 minutes on the clock Enfield won a corner and the ball was played into the Hitchin penalty area. Slack marking allowed an Enfield striker to fire home from about 10 yards. Enfield continued to press and create more chances with Molly making a couple of fine saves. On 10 minutes Hitchin nearly equalised in freakish circumstances. Good pressure from Heather won a corner. Sarah fired in an excellent cross which, helped by the wind, smashed against the near post.

As the first half progressed Enfield continued to press and Hitchin struggled to get out of their own half. On 23 minutes a rare attack by Hitchin saw a handball awarded against an Enfield defender on the edge of her area, Sarah fired the resultant free-kick wide. On 27 minutes Heather had a half chance but she too shot wide. Hitchin was to regret these missed opportunities. After one close call with a disallowed Enfield goal on 30 minutes, the visitors scored twice in quick succession. On 33 minutes Enfield scored their second with a shot high over Molly and on 37 minutes a complete mix-up between Jess and Molly saw Enfield capitalising on the mistake with their third goal.

A disappointing and wet half came to an end with Enfield leading comfortably 0-3. After a frank and direct team talk at half-time, Hitchin started the second period a lot more positively. On 44 minutes some good progressive play by Beth found Maddie in an advanced position but she could not get her shot away. Two minutes later Sarah tried her luck with a long range effort that went just wide. Hitchin continued to press forcing a succession of corners but Enfield generally looked comfortable in defence. Enfield continued to create their own chances and Molly pulled of a couple of good saves. On 61 minutes Beth supplied Heather whose shot from 20 yards was on target but too close to the goalkeeper. Helen and Heather then exchanged an excellent interchange of passes almost providing Beth with a goal scoring chance.

The highlight of the game came on 67 minutes; it stopped raining! Unfortunately this momentous event did not help Hitchin’s cause; Enfield scored their fourth when one of their strikers was allowed too much space in the Hitchin penalty area. Hitchin continued to push for a consolation goal. Good work by Heather down the left provided Carmen, now moved out of defence, with a half chance that was smothered by the Enfield goalkeeper.

The game ended at 0-4 to Enfield. It was not a great game for Hitchin but as already said conditions were difficult and their second half efforts were much better. Carmen had another commanding game in defence but the player of the match award was given to Alex for a busy and committed performance in midfield.
