St. Albans 2 v 1 Hitchin Hearts Belles

Six girls made the trip south to St Albans today for a very tight encounter. St Albans play on a small and bumpy pitch but an entertaining game was played out in good but cold weather conditions. The girls put on a superb exhibition of teamwork, passing and communication but that’s enough about the warm-up, heres the match report:

1st Quarter- 0-0

The Belles got off to a really good start and had most of the early possession and saw a shot by Victoria cannon back off the post. St Albans defended well and then got more into the game but their attacks were thwarted by Chloe in goal who came off her line well to clear. The half ended with both teams evenly matched and the Belles starting to get their passing game going.

2nd Quarter- 1-1

The second quarter started badly for the Belles who lost the ball at a corner and were hit on the break. The St Albans no 18 stormed through the Belles defence and slotted a good finish past Chloe. This lifted the home team and they immediately went on the attack again causing some desperate defending by the Belles. Again Chloe, cheered on by her shivering Mum hidden under a pile of coats, came to the rescue with some good clearances and Cleo chipped in with some great tackles. The Belles were up against it but then against the run of play put together a great passing move involving Cleo, Tashai, Victoria and finally on to Courtney who turned in the box and scored superbly into the far corner. Suddenly the girls confidence grew and they ended the half strongly, when from a St Albans free-kick Tashai blocked a shot and then ran the length of the pitch only to be denied by a good save from the St Albans goalie.

Half-time entertainment – parents were treated to an exhibition of air-shots and wild misses over the bar by Tashai’s Dad. Thank goodness Tashai wasn’t watching……..

3rd Quarter 0-0

The Belles were completely on top in this quarter and forced a number of corners and half-chances. The girls were winning tackles and their passing game was going well but they just lacked that little bit of composure in front of goal when the chances came. The girls created 5 good chances in this 10 minute spell with shots from Courtney and Tashai following assists from Cleo and Rosie but they just couldn’t convert. Simon was having flashbacks to several Arsenal games he has witnessed over the years and watched as St Albans defended well and held on.

4th Quarter 1-0

The last quarter ended with both teams slugging it out and was very evenly matched. The girls worked very hard for each other and continued to create half-chances with Rosie and Victoria in the thick of the action. But just as we were all deciding that a draw was a fair result St Albans played a good cross-field ball to their no.18 who, having been left unmarked, again made no mistake with a calm finish past Chloe. The girls fought hard in the last couple of minutes to get another equalizer – Tashai came close a couple of times following a couple of trademark runs – but it wasn’t to be. Final score 2-1 to St Albans.

A harsh defeat but the girls played well, worked hard for each other and there were lots of positives to take into the next game. St Albans took their chances well and that was the difference in the end. Well done girls!
