The 2006/2007 season started off with a 2:10PM kick off under the blazing sun in Stevenage. And Hitchin Belles could not have hoped for a better start - within little more than a minute of Bedwell taking the kick-off Tamsin scored to put the Belles ahead. The match settled down to a very competitive, end-to-end game after that, with both Bedwell and Hitchin having good attacking chances - in particular the Belles won a couple of corners that troubled Bedwell. The second quarter of the match saw Bedwell exerting increasing pressure, and despite a really hard-working performance from the Belles, Bedwell got their reward around the 20-minute mark with a goal from a great long-range shot that gave Christie little chance.
And so at half time the score stood at 1-1.
The second half started again with a great chance for Hitchin when Helen make a solo break up-field, but she failed to finish and the chance passed. Bedwell took up again where they had left off in the first half, with lots of pressure in midfield and only steadfast tackling and hard work from all the Belles kept Bedwell at bay. Sophie and Beth in particular showed excellent strength, but within 10 minutes of the restart Bedwell had claimed a goal to go ahead, and over the following 5 minutes Hitchin conceded a further 3 quick (and slightly unlucky) goals, to fall behind by 4 goals to 1. Even then the Belles did not give up - still battling and fighting for every ball - and a few chances came their way; Casey had a shot at goal but couldn't score on this occasion. Shortly before the end the very strong Bedwell no. 14 claimed another goal with a long-range shot to make it 5-1, and that was how the match ended.
So in the end the first match is a defeat. The Belles were disappointed with the result, and the score-line certainly doesn't reflect how close and hard-fought the match was. We must take encouragement from how hard all the girls worked throughout the match - fighting right to the end in very difficult conditions and against a very tough opposition. This is not the result we would all have hoped to deliver for birthday girl Christie, but the whole team gave her their best wishes, and we know that better games and better results will be coming to us this season if the girls keep working in this spirit.
Player of the match: Beth
