Match Summary

A brand new kit and a new coach in the shape of Adam saw Hitchin see off the mighty Spurs in an enthralling match. Eva was expecting the sort of welcome you get in down town Baghdad after we watched the Spurs team practising shooting from the half way line but she pulled off some stunning saves to keep Tottenham at bay. A great team effort, which saw heroics from a number of the Hitchin players who really stood tall and made every tackle and pass count. A very good match in terms of skill and commitment saw several key Tottenham players neutralised for considerable periods of the match to Hitchinís credit. Going forward Hitchin always looked dangerous and Tottenham had some terrific strikers who could really smack the ball hard, so hard after one shot on the Hitchin goal it nearly broke the cross bar and the follow up shot just stopped rolling near Letchworth. A great match for the supporters on both sides to watch and it was played in good sportsmanship with plenty of thrills and spills. It has to be said a big well done to the Hitchin team. A well-deserved draw against the top team in the league gives a great boost ahead of the next match against the Rockets; perhaps Hitchin can put the dampeners on their touch paper next week? Still unbeaten in 2007 Hitchin march onwards and upwards and you can see Paulís grin from Stevenage after todayís result.

First Half

A very lively start from both teams and straight into top gear for Hitchin, who really motored from the word go. Tottenham won an early corner but failed to create any problems for the Hitchin defence, with Monica in great form and Natalie reading the game well to make some very good tackles. Lauren full of running cleared the ball on a number of occasions with some great clearances. Roisin really battled hard and never gave up demonstrating the whole Hitchin team spirit. At the other end Alex chased well and hit the ball goal bound on several occasions. Steph started to create really good openings with some really clever touches and passes. Louise worked hard with Sarah to neutralise any threat from the Tottenham midfield. Sian up front had to work really hard to get the ball but did put good pressure on the Spurs defence with a series of well-timed runs. Tottenham started to pile the pressure on forcing a series of corners and Eva who commanded her area well and came out to make some really great saves. At the other end the pressure was relieved when Hitchin won a corner, which was cleverly taken by Sammy who slotted a great pass to Sarah whose resulting shot just went over. A very absorbing half ended goalless despite the attacking intentions of both teams who were unable to penetrate some very strong defending on both sides.

Second Half

Tottenham always start their second half with a real blitz on goal and true to form Hitchin were soon really put under the cosh as wave after wave of Tottenham attacks came forward. One particular shot from Tottenham rebounded off the cross bar like a rocket. Hitchin conceded several corners and were finally beaten when a good through pass put one of their players through to make it 0-1 to Tottenham. All credit to Hitchin they kept their heads up and showed real grit and determination to get back into the match. Sammy grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and danced her way through the Tottenham defence to smash the ball into the top of the net, a great goal and the game was back on Hitchin 1 Tottenham 1. Elise and Jo came on as substitutes and were thrown straight into the melee and both made some great tackles again frustrating the opposing strikers. Tottenham came back strongly after the Hitchin goal forcing corner after corner and again Eva came to Hitchinís rescue with a series of fine saves. Sarah won a great free kick but had to retire injured which gave Kerrie her chance to join in and make her mark. A very tense final few minutes with 2 minutes of extra time bought on concerns of a smash and grab raid by Tottenham to score the winner, but it was not to be and Hitchin piled on the pressure looking to finish off Tottenham and they knew it. A series of corners to Hitchin ended the match. All credit to both teams on a great match and a great result for Hitchin; they could have had all 3 points and were unlucky not to win.

Girl of the match

All the team excelled today and it seems unfair to single out one individual but Eva had probably her finest games for Hitchin with some outstanding saves and she gave really good direction to her defenders. She dominated her area and had real focus on the job in hand. Well done to all of the team for a really outstanding team performance and result
